Milestone Explorer
Pick an age to explore the speech sounds and language milestones many children show around that time. These are typical ranges, not deadlines.
Typical ranges, not deadlines — children develop at their own pace.
Educational reference only — not a diagnosis
This tool shares typical developmental milestones for families to learn from. Every child develops at their own pace. Only a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) can evaluate your child's individual communication skills.

Expressive (talking)
- Uses 3-4 word sentences regularly
- Asks "who," "what," and "where" questions
- Tells about something that happened
Receptive (understanding)
- Understands most of what is said at home
- Follows 2-3 step directions
- Understands basic concepts (in, on, under, big, little)
When to check in with an SLP
Around age 3
It's a good idea to check in with a speech-language pathologist if:
- Strangers understand less than half of what your child says
- Not asking questions or using short sentences
- Consistent difficulty following 2-step directions
- Stuttering that has lasted more than 6 months
If any of these apply, an evaluation by a licensed SLP can give you a clear picture of your child's communication development. Early support makes a difference.

Please note: This is a free educational reference for families, not a diagnostic tool or a replacement for an evaluation. It shows typical speech-sound and language milestones by age (1–7), which sounds are usually mastered vs still developing, and a supportively-framed note on when it can be a good idea to check in with a speech-language pathologist. Every child develops at their own pace, and these are typical ranges rather than deadlines. The tool never tests, scores, grades, or evaluates a child; it stores nothing on the device; and it speaks only the on-screen content, and only when a Hear button is tapped. Only a licensed SLP can evaluate an individual child's communication.
